What Is the CELPIP Score Scale?

CELPIP uses a band score scale from M (below Level 3) up to 12 across four components: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.

Each component is scored independently. For immigration purposes, IRCC evaluates each component individually — you must meet the minimum in every section.

⚠️ A high Listening score cannot compensate for a low Reading score. Each skill must independently meet the minimum requirement.

CELPIP Score Chart — CLB Equivalents

CELPIP is the simplest English test for Canadian immigration: your score maps directly to CLB (Canadian Language Benchmark) on a 1:1 basis. CELPIP 7 = CLB 7. No conversion formula needed.

How CELPIP Score Affects Your CRS Points

In Express Entry's Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), language ability is worth up to 136 points for a single applicant — the highest-weighted single factor in the entire CRS.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How is the CELPIP Listening score calculated?

The CELPIP Listening section contains 38 questions. Your raw score (number of correct answers) is converted to a CELPIP level using the official score chart above. For example, answering 27–31 questions correctly places you at CELPIP Level 7 (CLB 7).

Q: Is CELPIP the same as CLB?

Yes. CELPIP scores map directly to CLB levels on a 1:1 basis — CELPIP 7 = CLB 7. CELPIP 10, 11, and 12 all correspond to CLB 10+ in IRCC's equivalency table. No conversion formula is needed.

Q: What CELPIP score do I need for Express Entry?

Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) and CEC TEER 0/1 require a minimum of CELPIP 7 in all four components (CLB 7). For CEC TEER 2/3, the minimum is CELPIP 5. Federal Skilled Trades requires CELPIP 5 in Listening and Reading, and CELPIP 4 in Writing and Speaking.

Q: What CELPIP score do I need for Canadian citizenship?

Minimum CLB 4 in Listening and Speaking only, using CELPIP General-LS (not CELPIP General). Applicants aged 18–54 must provide proof of language ability.

Q: How long is my CELPIP score valid?

CELPIP scores are valid for 2 years from the test date. If your score expires while your Express Entry profile is active, your profile becomes incomplete and cannot participate in draws.

Q: How soon do I get my CELPIP results?

Typically within 4–5 business days after your test date, via your Paragon Testing online account.
